I love my visits to the country - Because I’m reminded of the many memories gathered there - Memories of riding next to Grandpa on the tractor; - Or watching as he milked the cows; - Sitting on a bale of hay, trying to name the newborn calves; - Or attempting to tame one of the wild kittens; - Sitting in the sun while brushing Sport’s matted fur.
Grandma’s treats of popcorn and chocolate chip cookies; - The patient help she gave me in making pink and white doilies for my room; - Walking out to the mailbox together, and then stopping to see if the berries in the ditch were ripe yet; - And always trying to get her to go investigate the old houses beyond the pasture.
But most of all, I love my visits to the country because they continually remind me of the precious love my grandparents have shown me.
-“Hilbert was the ‘quiet one’ of the family, very much an introvert, not given to many words. He bought a new 1935 Chevrolet and broke it in that fall, on a trip to Colorado to visit Jesse and Willy. Henry and Frances and Hank and Ruth went with him. A new experience was staying at the new ‘Tourist Cabins’ en route. For a number of years Hilbert and Lorraine Mortenson, a girl of Danish-German parentage who lived down the River Road and worked for folks in the beautiful residential area of Wausau’s ‘East Hill’, had been going steady. They were in Wiebe and Ora’s wedding party. They were married in early December of 1935 at the home of Lorraine’s parents. A dinner for relatives and friends followed in the same home. The following spring Henry Geurink decided to retire, and having two farms, there was one for each of the remaining sons to take over. Hilbert as the eldest had first choice. He chose Jesse’s farm to which they moved the spring after their wedding and where their children Gerald Jean and Lyle were born all having birthdays in May! After about 12 years Hilbert and Lorraine purchased a larger farm with a roomier house on the River Road and after a few more years completely remodeled that spacious home and lived there still after their retirement. Hilbert died rather suddenly and then after selling the farm, Lorraine moved to a cozy house in a convenient location in Wausau, near her youngest son and which she shares with her oldest sister, Florence. ”
